More sex, lies and videotape for James Spader in this satanic sideshoot from Strangers on a Train. Spader plays a brainy computer boffin, anxious for both a top job and a way out of getting hitched to a beautiful and wealthy socialite. When he runs into an evil thrill-seeker (played by Rob Lowe, breaking away from his Brat Pack image), Spader sees a man who makes things happen by his own rules. Lowe soon gets him what he wants - but the price is sky-high and soul-deep. The acting of the leading duo is good, but the writing isn't always worthy of their efforts in this interesting but flawed little shocker. Several endings were contemplated and the one the film eventually got seems truncated - and told an entirely different story from the one on the distributors' handout. Another case, perhaps, for a director's cut.
