A story of exile and dislocation, a theme familiar to Asian films. Heavily biographical for its director Ann Hui, it explores the stormy relationship between an estranged mother and daughter, which eventually gives way to mutual understanding as the two women discover a common bond as exiles. Only a central sequence set in Japan relies too heavily on coincidence and comes across as superficial.
