An engrossing thriller in which extreme violence and comic dialogue blend unexpectedly well. The plot carries echoes of Shadow of a Doubt: Junior (Alec Baldwin) is a vicious and daring thief who steals from those who steal and is not above the odd murder to help him evade the law or change identities. He sets up home with a little hotel hooker (Jennifer Jason Leigh) of whom he remains strangely fond, even when he decides to add her nest egg of $10,000 to his coffers. Hot on their trail is a veteran cop (Fred Ward) trying to cope with a massive workload as well as a new set of upper dentures. After a heavy interview, Junior decides said cop would be better in hospital for a while. Beating him up, he steals his gun, badge and - for added humiliation - teeth. Baldwin creates a memorable portrait of this lethal Jack the Lad and, while Ward is a touch over the top as the grimacing cop, some of his exchanges with his partner (Charles Napier) are spot on target with their rough-edged but comradely banter.
