In spite of shortcomings in the script, this airborne disaster movie, formerly known as Crash Landing: The Rescue of Flight 232, generates its own charge of tension from the amazing true events running through its story of an airliner seemingly on a crash course to tragedy after its engines fail. With disaster movie survivor Charlton Heston and fellow veteran James Coburn - their several films together include Major Dundee and The Last Angry Men - gritting their teeth in the cause of suspense, Lamont Johnson gives the piece an urgency that less talented directors might have missed. His frenzied pace catches much of the desperation of the life-or-death saga.
