An excellent contemporary Western penned by Larry McMurtry, who wrote the original novel for the classic drama The Last Picture Show. This one deals with the impact of strip-mining on the land and the people who work it in Rosebud County, Montana, in particular ageing Hoyce Guthrie (Richard Crenna) and his independent wife Bess (Gena Rowlands. They clash when a power company offers them a bucketful of cash to sell their land for coal-mining. Should they sell out or continue working the property as their ancestors have done for more than 100 years? Crenna and Rowlands are outstanding, while you can spot future leading man Michael Madsen in a supporting role.
