As exquisitely photographed as it is hopelessly outdated, this Australian film about a doomed teen triangle is set in the Sixties, but smacks more of low-budget Americana of the Fifties, with a nod or two to James Dean and John Garfield. Heroine Meg has just given herself to straight arrow Johnny (Russell Crowe, now big on the Hollywood scene) when moody, broody rebel Sam walks back into her life, and from then on the script shamelessly manipulates its characters - often throwing them out of character - to obtain the ending it requires. No cliché (or pregnant close-up) is left unturned in the process. It's a long while getting started, too, but then there's always the photography to look at.
