A little man versus corrupt big business is the theme of this exceptional TV movie scripted by David Mamet from his own hit play. Set in 1930s Chicago, it concerns the plight of an inventor pursued by every means - legal and foul - to reveal the blueprints for his revolutionary engine that uses water as its sole power. The cast is top drawer, including Mamet regular Joe Mantegna, Treat Williams, and Patti LuPone, the Broadway star of 'Evita' and 'Les Miserables'. Steven Schachter's direction gives the production a highly stylised look with lots of angle shots. The first TV film from Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, 'The Water Engine' sets a high standard for future productions to live up to.
