A romantic comedy of embarrassment that's almost unbearable to watch is bad news. This one is in-and-out for a little while, but completely falls apart in the last hour. One of its major problems is that you just can't see what's so wrong with the character played by Richard Dreyfuss, who's supposed to tear an Italian-American family apart when he marries its older daughter (Holly Hunter). He's alleged to be crass and arrogant, though he's certainly no more vulgar than the family he joins. And, as Dreyfuss is rather a charming actor, it's difficult to understand why Papa (Danny Aiello) would want to throw him out. Dreyfuss is good, as usual. The others try their best with what they've got. It isn't much.
