Joel McCrea pins on a tin star to play legendary lawman Wyatt Earp in this original-thinking, surprisingly stylish Western. He's hired to clean up a town and starts by banning firearms - not a popular decision. An all-too familiar plot and an indifferent script could have condemned this horse opera to oblivion, but director Jacques Tourneur created a fast-moving, action-filled tale whose pace gallops over any plot deficiencies. The action is fiery, the acting good and the showdown quite something. In a very strong cast, watch out for a young Lloyd Bridges as a gunslinger and Peter Graves (the pilot in Airplane! ) in an early role. The familiar menacing figures of Jack Elam and Robert Wilke are also among those members of the supporting cast waiting to shoot McCrea in the back. And, yes - there's a theme song, too, sung by the High Noon man Tex Ritter.
