Although director Yves Simoneau strives to pull the tension tighter than a bowstring in this true-life clever-killer thriller, he can't entirely overcome the fact that the central character, as written (by Philip Rosenberg) and acted (by Treat Williams) isn't as fascinating as he should be. Rather more interesting is LA attorney Vincent Bugliosi (edgily portrayed by Arliss Howard), who became obsessed with trapping the self-confident murderer, and on whose book this crime drama is based. The mind games that follow are at their best when they don't have too many words to hamper them.
