Kenny Rogers' third outing as 'The Gambler' takes him into John Wayne territory as he and young sidekick Bruce Boxleitner investigate what sort of scam is really going on behind a killing that is supposed to have been carried out by Sioux Indians. Bearing in mind that one of The Gambler's best friends is Chief Sitting Bull, Rogers is naturally rooting for the Sioux. This is an amiable resurrection of the western genre, with plenty of poker playing, saloon fights, marauding Indians and plucky pioneers. But it's overlong and tries to rush off in too many directions at once, with the story alternating between the semi-comic and the seriously tragic. The film's entertaining enough, but with more discipline and focus could have been so much better.
