Although it's decidedly quirky and has some purple patches, this rather wan comedy (about three friends from a singing group that's breaking up as the movie starts), which is also occasionally irritating and endearing in turn, is unlikely to make you laugh a lot. The script is very sub-Beaches and the one really funny scene comes when Diane Keaton's cats fight to eat her dinner while she's trying to hold a conversation. The men, Elliott Gould, Ruben Blades and Aidan Quinn, give selfless, almost faceless support. And the bleakness of the Atlantic City coastline is flawlessly captured. Ultimately, though, this is a movie that promises much and never quite delivers. The actresses do their own singing, though the plot demands, unfortunately, that they don't do it very well.
