A big budget Australian adventure detailing the doomed 1860 expedition of explorers Robert Burke and William Wills to cross the continent and back. Surprisingly, considering the big name cast - Nigel Havers, Jack Thompson, Greta Scacchi - and the fact that Prince Charles and Princess Diana attended its Australian premiere, the film was not shown in British cinemas. But don't be put off by its length: this is an outstanding drama featuring excellent performances, stunning location photography and a literate script. Graeme Clifford, an Australian working in Hollywood (whose finest work to date remains Frances, the biography of the movie star Frances Farmer starring Jessica Lange) returned home to direct.
