A deceptively simple story from Australia, with the powerful Judy Davis, the Glenda Jackson of Australian movies, as a woman who, stranded in a small coastal town, befriends a young girl who turns out to be the daughter she abandoned years before. A well-written script stops this drama being the soap opera it could have become. Strong performances from Davis as Lilli and Jan Adele as the grandmother give the story added depth. Director Gillian Armstrong, who made 'My Brilliant Career', makes this film altogether a memorable experience.
