This Matlock case sends the campaigning defence lawyer to England to take part in a mock trial, defending a young man accused of murdering his wealthy father. If you've seen star Andy Griffith in 'A Face in the Crowd', you'll see how his screen persona has remained doggedly the same, if progressively softer, in the last 30 years. He's something of a latter-day Will Rogers, with his back porch wisdom and cracker-barrel philosophies. It's a persona that works well in 'Matlock', but its limitations stopped him being a major film star, despite the undoubted acting abilities he showed in the earlier film.
