From the 20s to the late 40s, 10 different actors - including Britain's Wilfrid Hyde White in the only non-American adaptation - portrayed debonair private eye Philo Vance, created in the novels of SS Van Dine. The MGM B-movie contains the least effective Vance in foreign-accented Paul Lukas. Second-billed Rosalind Russell described the film as 'a real bomb' and 'the worst picture I ever made'! Silent comedy star Louise Fazenda has a small character role.
