Matt Salinger, actor son of author J D Salinger, must be used to playing larger-than-life characters. Not content with donning the disguise of Captain America, here he tackles a real-life folk hero, Claude Dallas, a mountain man who went on the run after gunning down two fish and game officers in the mountains of Idaho. Salinger, an appealing actor with the ease of Gary Cooper, captures well the contradictions in the character. On the run after being convicted in a court, the real Dallas was still a free man when this TV movie was first broadcast in the US. He was recaptured in March 1987. The later star-billed Annette Bening is near the bottom of the cast in this one.
