Scent Of A Woman You know the one about opposites having something to learn from each other and forging the unlikeliest of friendships. Beaches somehow made it work; now writer Bo Goldman and director Martin Brest show us how to go right over the top with the idea. Chris O'Donnell (not half firm enough) is a 17-year-old prep student saddled for the weekend with irascible, unreasonable, unmanageable, blind retired Lt Col Slade (a notably mannered performance from Al Pacino which took an Oscar). Scent of a Woman The kid finds himself whisked off to New York, where the colonel has in mind spending his disability pensions on one hell of a time, followed by blowing his brains out. The adventures of this unlikely if somewhat unloveable couple have a certain charm, and sequences involving a dance and a madcap car drive work winningly. But it's 90 minutes' worth spread out to more than 150. The climax piles our disbelief into a sandwich of sentiment, and opportunities for meaningful dialogue between the two protagonists are all wasted.

Chris O'Donnell is as ever poor in this mediocre film. Al Pacino should have won best actor several times before this but really didn't deserve it for this outing. Maybe it was regret from the Acadamy for not giving it to him for Godfather II or Dog Day Afternoon. Uninteresting story without any likeable characters. If you like to have tears jerked out of you by rubbish then watch this but if you're a Pacino fan then aviod because you'll be sorely disappointed.

Despite how much I love Pacino and his talent I can't help think when I watch this movie...over-hyped. It has an interesting storyline with some fantastic scenes. But to me this started the whole craze of Pacino yelling some sort of varied catchphrase (hooo-ya!). It is fantastic Pacino got his oscar for his performance as in the long run it was well deserved, but I can't help thinking it really should've been for something else. Aside from this I do enjoy this movie when i dont analyse it.

One of the best things about this film is that it removes some of the misunderstandings about blindness. The film shows that a blind person can manage their affairs, live independently, offer some good advice, as well as being pig headed, ignorant, and generally a right down to earth trouble-maker. Not quite the normal picture of a sweet old lady who is thankful when pushed across a road she did not want to cross in the first place.
