As powerful Hollywood producer Mel Wexler (Christopher Plummer) is to find out, the lives of the cast of his daytime soap opera Manhattan are far racier than anything in the programme. There's an abusive husband, a dope-crazed wife and blackmailing harridans, as well as organ transplants, mystery legacies and real-life murder suspects. It sounds tacky, but is given a superior gloss by its distinguished cast and top-drawer production values. Stephanie Beacham even manages to outdo Joan Collins's legendary Alexis Carrington, in the central role of the fading box-office star who has so far avoided the lure of the TV screen, but needs to make a comeback.
