This true-life family drama casts a teenage Rick Schroder (the child star of The Champ) as the eldest of seven brothers, who pledges to keep the family together when their mother dies. Poverty, an alcoholic father, interfering if well-meaning agencies and charities, as well as natural disasters are all thrown in his way. The film successfully recreates the atmosphere of smalltown America in an understated way, but the action itself lacks bite. On the acting front, honours go to British-born Veronica Cartwright, as a friendly social worker.
