Ed Harris comes up trumps once again as one of Hollywood's leading character stars in this slick humdinger of a courtroom drama. A studied picture of conflicting emotions and loyalties, Harris's central lawyer figure is a fascinating character, a man on the descent into just the sort of corruption he has spent his life defending in court. He decides to quit his profession after a crisis of conscience over helping free one too many guilty men, but is enticed back to defend his new girlfriend's estranged husband, accused of murdering an undercover rookie policewoman posing as a hooker. While it may be less psychologically penetrating than the big screen's Jagged Edge, this gripping cable TV movie is nonetheless an intelligent film noirish offering from director Roger Spottiswoode.
