`Winning is everything,' is the message in this often exhilarating, always superbly shot (by John Toll) yachting drama, which sometimes hits the doldrums away from its action scenes. The prize at stake here is the America's Cup, for which American sailor Modine and girlfriend (Grey) have to take on the forces of nature as well as an arrogant Australian (but of course) rival. The plot is a bit cliched and the emotional elements are bland, but the stars seem to be giving it all they've got on board the yacht, and the spectacular racing action, particularly at the breathtaking climax of this patriotic American tale, will keep you near the edges of your seats. Another outdoors action drama from Carroll Ballard: a specialist in the genre, he also made Never Cry Wolf and The Black Stallion.
