Although Cruising's director is best known for The French Connection, this nasty, early Eighties 'slasher' movie - for want of a better word - is a world way from that classic cop thriller. Although it boasts a good cast - Al Pacino, Karen Allen (in her debut) and Paul Sorvino, this is just vile, unpleasant and tacky - and not especially well made. Pacino plays a cop who goes undercover in New York's gay S&M clubs, seeking out a brutal serial killer preying on homosexuals. However, as he becomes more immersed in his role, his personality changes, until he's no longer sure why he's 'cruising the scene'. A real curio, if you can stomach it, but so full of holes, misdirection and brutal violence, that it only barely even makes sense.
