This murder mystery set in ancient Rome has many of the vices and virtues of The Name of the Rose. Ornate settings, plush production values and an interesting sleuth (in this case Bryan Brown's Falco, as down-on-his-luck as any Chandleresque gumshoe from more recent times) can't entirely counter-balance the facts that the supporting characters are too grotesque and the story as unlikely as anything from a James Bond film.
