Joseph Losey's powerful version of Ibsen's famous play was one of two rival films that came out in the same year. This one has superlative performances by Jane Fonda (who never seems to give a bad portrayal), Trevor Howard and Edward Fox. Gerry Fisher's colour photography of the snowy Norwegian landscapes makes the most of its opportunities to create pictures of bleak beauty; and there's an excellent score for tinkling brass by the ubiquitous French composer Michel Legrand.
