Allegedly directed by Josef von Sternberg, this film was held up for seven years before being finally released in 1957. With its comic-strip dialogue and one-dimensional heroics, it would sit well with Hollywood's current spate of `Red-baiting' films. Janet Leigh is a cutie-pie Russian spy, while John Wayne shambles through the action with a permanent amiable grin. The flying scenes are flashily spectacular.
