Although dating from a time when the famous Ealing comedies, with which Alec Guinness was then associated, were in full sway, this film is in altogether gentler style. An affecting light drama with humorous insights, it comes from the pen of J B Priestley and features vivid supporting performances from Kay Walsh, Sidney James and Wilfrid Hyde White. But it's Guinness' quiet authority that lingers longest in the memory.
