Slow-moving but strongly acted and well written drama of life in a Welsh village in 1892 whose very existence is threatened when a reservoir is planned for the site. Edith Evans dominates the film as the widow determined to fight the plans of the nouveau riche ex-villager (Emlyn Williams, who also wrote and directed). Richard Burton made his film debut as one of the two foster sons. The film is impressively scored by John Greenwood.
