'Tombstone? It does sound quiet, I'll give you that.' Led by Kevin Costner's sterling turn as the Wild West's legendary lawman Wyatt Earp and a splendid wisecracking portrayal of Doc Holliday by Dennis Quaid, this valuable warts-and-all biopic takes its time but eventually grips and involves. The early sequences of Earp's youth set the scene perfectly, then there's lots of realistic Western detail and a compelling, complex plot. If things start to drift midway, the famous gunfight at the OK Corral provides a startlingly brutal and satisfying climax. Underrated. Quaid lost over 30lb to play Doc, who suffered from TB.
