It's a tough life for single parent Callie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her five children. Eventually it all gets too much and, suffering from severe manic depression, she is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. The children find love and stability with Patty (Sally Struthers), but then mum returns to claim them... Although this heart-tugging drama comes across as soap opera, it is a true story. A court battle between their natural mother and foster mother had the children siding with Patty. Solid performances from Parker and Struthers, plus Michael Ray Rhodes' firm directoral hand on the tiller, stop this descending into low melodrama, although it occasionally sails close.
