This thriller is very much a product of our time - the subject of child sex abuse is now talked about with alarming regularity on TV. Former Moonlighting star Cybill Shepherd continued her climb back to the top from the TV wilderness, shining as a mother who is horrified to discover that a family friend has been abusing her eight-year-old daughter. The film suffers from being a touch melodramatic - inevitable, given the subject matter - and does damage the story's credibility. Director Ivan Passer (Silver Bears, Stalin) removed his name from the finished film (citing creative differences with the producers) and it now carries the Screenwriters' Guild's infamous 'Alan Smithee' nom-de-plume.
