Former college footballer Burt Reynolds made his big screen debut in this enjoyable slice of melodramatic southern gothic about evangelical faith healers. But it was newcomer Salome Jens who garnered the best reviews as Angel Baby, a formerly mute girl who, cured by itinerant evangelist George Hamilton, dedicates her life to exploiting her own divine gift. Jens effortlessly strikes just the right blend of dumb blonde and novice nun. And there are a couple of scene-stealing cameos from seasoned veterans Joan Blondell and Henry Jones.
