This is a ham-fisted attempt at a modern-day film noir. Poorly written characters, a lack of sinister atmosphere and a plot that lurches from one ridiculous event to another finally conspire to sink the enterprise. A very youthful Kiefer Sutherland makes the best impression as a revenge-crazy killer masquerading as the new sheriff's deputy arriving in a small resort town. But, as the sheriff, Beau Bridges is simply too nice and decent to be believable as a man driven by passion to murder his married girlfriend's husband. Double Indemnity it's not! Quentin Tarantino fans should keep their eyes peeled for a very early appearance by his Reservoir Dogs co-star Michael Madsen.
