This runs like a good episode of ER - not surprising with a superior director in Lesli Linka Glatter (who recently made Now and Then for the big screen), and a cast that includes Joe Mantegna, Lynn Whitfield, Paul Dooley, Melinda Dillon, Richard Beymer, Jay O Sanders and Deborah Unger. Obviously they all caught a whiff of the real thing in Susan Black and Lance Gentile's script, which turns the spotlight on Mantegna as an ER doctor under pressure. Without a neurosurgeon or a CAT scanner, Mantegna improvises a cure for a man suffering from brain trauma after a car accident - but it's a procedure that backfires on him. Although both provocative and watchable, tthe film does at times overplay its political hand, but that's not a fault that should worry ER fans too much. Despite the excellent supporting cast, Mantegna dominates the screen throughout as the beleaguered medic.
