Writer-director Rockne S O'Bannon knows a bit about suspense: his 1989 film starring Ally Sheedy, Fear, raised a few hackles, so we might expect this variation on the deadly-bee syndrome to be a little tauter than some. And so it proves: the bees' track record in movies is by and large not a happy one, but here they hive off most of the best moments, providing well-orchestrated foes for Robert Hays and his family as they try to get out of their house before the bees can get in, if you see what we mean. The acting is moderate and the developments predictable: even so, you should be(e) on guard for the jumpier moments, which should give you quite a buzz. Now a major Hollywood star, fresh-faced Ryan Phillippe has the juvenile lead.
