America's obsession with turning criminals into media celebrities is successfully mined for the blackest of comedy here by John Waters, king of bad taste. Kathleen Turner adds heavyweight Hollywood glamour in a casting coup in the central role of a seemingly sweet and innocent suburban mother who quickly becomes a serial killer. One of the funniest gags, in a cheeky nod to Hitchcock, has Mom clubbing to death with a leg of lamb a woman who returns a videotape of the musical Annie without rewinding the tape. Camp humour and bad taste are the order of the day and the cast is peppered with the usual Waters collection of misfits and weirdos, the infamous and the obscure, including Ricki Lake, who shot to fame in Waters' Hairspray, former porn queen Traci Lords, and cameos from Joan Rivers (her scene with Turner is a gem) and Suzanne Somers.
