An astonishing feature film debut from director Steven Zaillian, this uplifting story is about a child chess prodigy who may well be the second coming of legendary Bobby Fischer - hence the original US title, `Searching for Bobby Fischer'. Newcomer Max Pomeranc is a terrific discovery as Josh, a seven-year-old chess genius, who hones his talent playing against street hustlers. But his life changes the day his father introduces him to chess coach Ben Kingsley, who recognises his true talent and potential. The film examines the battle between allowing a child to live a normal life and the wishes of the parents. A wonderful, heartwarming drama, with terrific performances from all concerned, including Joe Mantegna as Josh's father, and Laurence Fishburne as one of the chess-playing street bums.
