A wonderful jigsaw whose pieces detail the personal and political lives of three young university graduates - two white, one black - in South Africa as apartheid comes to an end and Nelson Mandela is released from prison. New Zealand's leading young actress, Kerry Fox, seen recently in the acclaimed Scottish thriller Shallow Grave, Dambisa Kente and Michele Burgers are equally good in the central roles. The film is on surest ground when it conveys the overwhelming sense of loneliness each girl experiences as they search for common ground to stay friends amid the political turmoil around them.
