A bright, bouncy musical, bulging with hummable songs and energetic dance routines inventively choreographed by the great Busby Berkeley. Made by RKO, its cast wouldn't disgrace a musical from across the road at MGM: Janet Leigh, in winning form as the small-town girl hitting the Great White Way in search of fame and fortune, heads a cast that includes Tony Martin, Gloria De Haven, Eddie Bracken, Ann Miller and variety veterans Smith and Dale (the inspirations for The Sunshine Boys) who play deli-owners and get to do a couple of their famous cross-talking routines. Star-spotters will have a field day running through the showgirls and bit parts for glimpses of Vera Miles, George Nader, Joi Lansing, Mamie Van Doren, Joan Evans, Mara Corday and others. And there's even a role for Berkeley's favourite midget actor Billy Barty. Despite all these ingredients, plus amazing Technicolor photography by Edward Cronjager and Harry Wild, the studio couldn't sell the picture to the public, and it lost almost a million dollars. Shame.
