Well, this is an oddity. A British diplomat in Paris (Anthony Higgins) suspects his wife (Charlotte Rampling) is having an affair. When he bursts into the flat she has rented he catches her in bed with a chimpanzee! (Yes, really! ) To compound this looniness, he suggests the chimp, called Max, move in with them. There are shades of Buñuel in director Nagisa Oshima's curious tale but it is neither credible nor truly incredible. Higgins and especially Rampling play it dead straight which should have given the film a disturbing feel. What lets the whole thing down is the chimp. It looks like what it is - someone in a monkey suit - so you can't take it seriously. Any dark and unsettling elements are ruined by this Abbott and Costello ape.
