An epic celebration of the life and work of Henry Purcell, one of England's earliest great composers, who died 300 years ago. In his last screenplay for the cinema, the late John Osborne traces Purcell's life and work, while comparing the decline of national values in the 1960s with similar events in the 17th century. Simon Callow is larger than life as Charles II; more considered performances come from Robert Stephens (in his last film role), Nina Young, Murray Melvin and Corin Redgrave. It demands patience, but the best bits are often rewarding and Nic Knowland's colour photography constantly so.
