Although its cartoonish action is often spectacularly staged, this fierce action film makes some basic miscalculations. Christopher Lambert and Mario Van Peebles are lithe adventure stars, but not up to delivering the script's supposedly wisecracking dialogue, while Patrick Stewart, who can be a very impressive actor, is handed a clichéd arch-villain that does his talent less than justice. And too little thought is given to logical plot development, resulting in the film's more violent scenes erupting without the spadework that should precede them. A formula, drugs-driven tale of chase and revenge: undemanding action fans should enjoy it well enough, but its ambitions to be something more come to nought.
