Feisty working girl Angie (Geena Davis) lives with her boyfriend Vinnie (James Gandolfini) in a close-knit Brooklyn community. She gets pregnant and, on the verge of marriage, sets off to find meaning in her life. The best scenes are the earlier ones, including the hilarious birth. The worst come as the movie runs downhill towards its manipulatively weepy ending. Stephen Rea is predictably underused as the Irish lawyer for whom Angie falls, but Davis holds together the moments of high drama and hysterical comedy with great gusto. The lightly scripted story does entertain, in fits and starts, on a superficial level throughout: only Davis digs deeper than the dialogue seems to allow.
