Jerry O'Connell (a rising star from Jerry Maguire and Scream 2) here plays young cocksure teenager Mac, who joins a forest ranger crew dynamiting a road pass under the supervision of the Head Ranger, Bill, played by Sam Elliott. Among the crew is the cook who also happens to be a card sharp, which, to Bill's delight, will enable him to go into town and exact revenge on his enemies by cleaning them out in the regular card game. Mac takes a dislike to the cook but follows the team into town anyway and there, distracted by the skirts of a young filly, falls in love. Although this tedious story originates from a short story by Norman MacLean, who penned A River Runs Through It, there's little action and excitement in this version. However, if you used to like seeing John-Boy going into town for his regular shenanigans in The Waltons, it may hold some freshness and appeal.
