A Menahem Golan/Yoram Globus production, this mess of a film stars Alan Arkin as a Topolesque prestidigitator in turn-of-the-centry Poland. Episodic in construction, the film's story (based on a novel by Nobel Literature Prize winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer) takes the form of an anecdote-littered odyssey. Salacious in parts, meaningless in others, this Menahem-directed, star-studded piece (Louise Fletcher, Shelley Winters and Valerie Perrine are totally wasted) is not recommended at all.
