This modern Western received a mixed bag of reviews when it was released. Based on an Elmore Leonard story, it centres on honest farmer Cody Glenn who finds himself made deputy of a corrupt town that is under constant threat from a spoiled, violent young man used to throwing his weight around. The new lawman finds himself, just like Bruce Willis in the 'Die Hard' films, the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time when Sheriff Glenn Ford leaves town to transport a prisoner and bedlam breaks out back home. The whole piece is given a certain amount of gravitas (although not a lot) by the presence of Ford as the laconic sheriff: he eats these sort of roles for breakfast.
