Produced and directed by its star (Gibson went on to win the Best Director Oscar), the film starts at a leisurely, almost pedestrian pace.

But once the fighting starts, it carries the audience along at the speed of a rollercoaster, with battle following battle and some of the most bloody and gruesome hand-to-hand fighting ever captured on film.

The battle scenes are certainly spectacular affairs and Gibson displays a masterful control of scenes involving thousands of extras.

One of the few films the teachers allowed pupils to watch during history or modern studies, this film resonated with many here in Scotland. Typically Hollywood, the film is historically inaccurate. However this film is not a history lesson, and for sheer cinematogrophy and frighteningly realistic battle scenes, not to mention funny moments scattered throughout the film, this it doesn't go wrong. The directing is trademark Gibson - epic and unforgettable.

The best film ever created. Hands down. I don't really care that it's not historically correct. It's an action packed drama with awsome battles. You have to watch it.

Although a bit cringy (Most of the Scots seem to have Irish accents!) it really does stir some Scottish pride. The freedom speach always goes down well before a Scotland football game and it's always good to have a wee dig at the English. Longshanks makes such a good villain(" The only problem with Scotland is it's full of scots!") BOOOO!
