The actress first attracted attention as the swiftly-despatched bride of Mel Gibson in the action drama Braveheart.
She studied at the Oxford School of Drama in Woodstock, Oxfordshire in 1993 and made her stage debut in the political drama The Mother.
Her first professional job was the British TV movie In The Wood, directed by Anna Campion, and she made her big screen debut in Australian horror yarn Loaded.
In 1995, she took a supporting role as the doomed bride of William Wallace in Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning epic, Braveheart.
Three years later she appeared in a trio of high profile releases - The Land Girls with Anna Friel, as a courtesan in Dangerous Beauty and as Christina Mundy in Dancing At Lughnasa.
In 2000, she was cast opposite John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe in Elias Merhige's Shadow Of The Vampire.
The same year she starred with Vanessa Redgrave in teh drama A Rumour of Angels and starred in the Kathryn Bigelow thriller The Weight of Water.
Subsequent appearances included the comedy Born Romantic and John Boorman's comedy thriller The Tailor of Panama with Pierce Brosnan.
In 2001, she starred alongside Brad Pitt and Robert Redford in the Tony Scott thriller Spy Game.
Recent work includes providing the voice of Zita in the Danish puppet drama Strings.
