An early film from Swedish director Lasse Hallström, later to go to Hollywood and make such films as Once Around and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, this begins a three-week run of the Swede's pre-Hollywood work. An inventive cinematic mind is evident in this rather racy romantic comedy, as Hallström injects animated sequences, and gives the hero a chauvinist alter ego which turns up (in the guise of another actor) as American gangster or Western bandit) urging our hero not to be the wimp he clearly is, as he tries to decide what to do about his pregnant girlfriend. Quite a breezy contemporary comedy, but broken up too much by its own disparate elements, especially when Hallström goes on to show our hero in the role of an active parent. But Magnus Harenstam is enjoyably convincing as the daydreaming hero forced to face up to reality.
