Verging on the pretentious, this semi-autobiographical film by Vera Belmont captures nicely the bohemian atmosphere of early Fifties Paris with its smokey jazz clubs populated by Left-wing beatniks. Yes, you can almost smell the Gitanes. Ultimately, however, the film will annoy more than enlighten, as too many scenes are invested with fussy camera movements and staccato editing. It's basically a romance as 15-year-old Nadia (played blandly by Charlotte Valandrey), an ardent champion of radical politics, falls for cynical photographer Lambert Wilson. He favours the good life above one which is politically correct and Nadia is confused. Will she be right-on or romantic? At the end of the day, do we really care?
